09:21 pm - Update on Betje

I took Betje to the vet last week, for a general check-up.
It appears she had an inflammation of her right ear as wel as of the right side of her jaw.
The inflamed ear caused her hesitant way of walking, because her sense of balance was disturbed, and the inflamed jaw must have been quite painful, because she had a very peculiar way of eating. Also one of her frontpaws (again the right one) had an inflamed nail.
In short: the animal was actually in a lot of pain.
After a shot of antibiotics and a treatment against flees, ticks, worms and other vermin I took her back home, with more antibiotics and eardrops. It was a joy to see how after just two days she already felt much better! Her gait was more sure and she ate without making weird sounds. And now, ten days later, she looks a lot happier.
And of course we are continuing the project "getting rid of all the excess hair on Betje". I could stuff a big pillow with all the hair I have plucked and combed off her. She enjoys being combed and plucked tremendously, and keeps coming back for more. She can't groom herself anymore, so it is important for her sense of well-being. Today I have started to comb her legs and belly, difficult to reach because she doesn't trust me enough yet to lay on her back and display her belly. But when she is on her legs she allows me to comb her underside very carefully.

The cats now eat near to each other, my cats are getting used to Betje. Poesjenel is actually quite sweet, tries to nuzzle Betje, but Betje is still too unsure to allow that. And I must compliment City that he hasn't shown his displeasure by peeing in the house, which he has done on occasion in the past. It helps that Betje cannot go upstairs, so City and Poesjenel feel that at least part of their territory is still exclusively theirs. But I somehow suspect that Betje will end on top of the hierarchy.

When we took Betje in I had feared that she would be with us for a short time, but now I am starting to believe that we'll enjoy her for quite a while yet!

Dan hebben je buren ook lekker goed voor't beestje gezorgd, als ze dat allemaal had. :(
