|08:59 pm - Goodbye Betje (warning: sad cat post)|
Today our dear Betje passed away.
She was losing weight rapidly, and had ever more trouble walking. She was also deteriorating mentally, at times yowling anxiously because she felt lost and alone.
But she still also had her good days. I decided to let the vet put her to sleep before she came to the point of only having bad days. The vet agreed after looking Betje over.
The last few days I carried her around the house in my arms, walked through the garden and let her feel the sunshine (between the rain and hail), gave her the food she loved most. Betje was in my arms when the vet gave her the first injection to put her to sleep. She passed away peacefully, and then it became clear how often she must have been in pain, because the difference between her relaxed pose in death and the cramped position she always slept in was large, even though she had painkillers.
Should I have decided sooner? Later? I don't know.
I only know she purred until the end, and the months she spent in my house she was loved and cared for.
The picture below was taken four years ago. Betje still lived with our neighbours then, but often visited us. She was already old then, sixteen years, and slept a lot as you can see. Poesjenel, who died suddenly last November, is looking curiously at our catnapping guest. The difference in colouring is not a photographic error, both were calico cats, but Betje was a 'bleached' version.
Very sorry you lost your sweet kitty! They were two beautiful cats.
Thank you for your kind words.

It's always difficult to lose someone you love. My heartfelt sympathies for your loss, and congratulations on your strength to let her pass, and with such love, dignity and tenderness. I cannot imagine a passing as caring and tender as the one you described.
BTW, I really love your icon, so sweet!
